Copy not showing on Netbook

Post by appleshaw » Wed 10 Oct 2018, 22:10

I have the program running on an old ASUS 900 which runs under Wine and up to now without problem. Trying to debug a program I find that the Trace option does not behave normally as there is no highlight at a line. Have also noticed that Copy does not work as highlighting is not present.
Have looked at other programs running under Wine and these do not show this behaviour.
Basic was installed as v.5 but have run the update program today but no change.
Any suggestions?

Eventually found command to tell me it is still only 1.0.
Took the hint to update but my ability in Linux is below basic. Will persevere with update

Wine 1.0 is very old. You mention that you have an Asus 900, I'm assuming you mean an Asus EeePC 900 laptop, which was sold with linux installed? The version of linux that it has must be around 10 years old by now.

I don't think Asus support linux anymore, but even if they do, they're not likely to support such old hardware anymore either. So in order to update your eee900 to a new version of linux, you will need to install a whole new linux distribution. If you decide to do that, I would recommend Linux Mint or Lubuntu.

Of course, you need to back up all your data before you update because updating will require you to format the disk drives.

But to be honest with you, I think you should buy a new laptop. The eeepc 900 is over ten years old and was considered to be a slow computer even when it was new. Any recent linux distribution will run very slowly on it.
There may also be problems with the eee900 not having enough disk space for modern distros, so installation may fail.

Thanks for comments. I have often thought about new portable but the ASUS does still provide adequate portable use and my genealogy software, GenoPro, runs happily under Wine when away from home, as does BBCBASIC programs. Just found the lack of screen showing where editing is happening means editing on the run is not possible.
Tried update of Wine but we were in an hotel with slow WiFi so have tried at home.
Not had much success yet as OS is Debian 4 and I suspect part of the problem. A Linux user looked to see if another version of Linux would improve things, but lack of memory meant it was probably better to stick with existing

Yes, it's probably not possible to install a recent version of wine on Debian 4.

I'm a bit of a fan/collector of old computers and I have one similar (or possibly identical) to yours. It is actually possible to run the latest stable version of Debian on your eee laptop, I do so with my asus eee from 2008. It runs quite well if you do a base install, and then install only the packages you need, such as Xorg and a low-resource windowmanager such as Openbox or IceWM. However, you need to be comfortable with linux and working with the command line to set up and use a system like this.
