xx ODBCLIB library for BB4W
« Thread started on: Nov 19th, 2017, 10:19pm »

Although this forum principally supports the cross-platform version of BBC BASIC, I should record that I recently released ODBCLIB.BBC, an initial attempt at a library for connecting to databases from BB4W. The library, and a demonstration program for accessing a test SQLite database (ODBCTEST.BBC), can be found in odbclib.zip at the Files area of the discussion group.

cant store OCBCLIB in the LIB directory because of permissions.

That seems a rather strange comment. Of course you need admin privileges to store the library there, but that is true of all BB4W libraries (BOX2DLIB, HASHLIB, HIMELIB etc.). ODBCLIB is not (and could not be) special in that regard.

Nearly all 'ordinary' Windows users are administrators; it is the default configuration when Windows is installed and many programs assume that it will be the case. UAC (User Account Control) largely eliminates any risk from that cause, without resulting in too much inconvenience.

If you are one of the small number of Windows users who choose not to run, ordinarily, as an admin then indeed you will need to login (or at least enter your password) in order to copy the library, but what could possibly be your objection to doing that? You must have had to do the same when BB4W was installed in the first place!

Indeed, I just never thought of executing BBC4W as admin and using BBC4W as the file transfer method. When I tried to transfer the library manually with windows, it said I needed permissions from the author to write there and it didn't ask for admin access.

I got it to work.
Thanks.

I don't know what "permissions from the author" means; what permissions and what author? It's just a file, without any metadata; at least it was when it left me!

The way I generally move a file is by using copy/cut-and-paste, or drag-and-drop, in Windows (File) Explorer. If admin privileges are required UAC will prompt for elevation.
