Mobile devices poll
« Thread started on: Jan 19th, 2017, 4:51pm » |
|
I've created this poll to get a feel for the potential market for, and degree of interest in, the Android version of BBC BASIC. If you can't see the poll you're probably reading this message in the 'View the 10 most recent posts of this forum' page, in which case please go to the main forum page to vote.
Eventually I will merge the results here with those of the similar poll posted at Groups.io, so please don't vote in both.
Richard.

I have both iOS devices and Android (a couple of Samsung tablets) and would love to see BBC Basic running on the Android environment and would happily buy another BBC Basic license if you were to release for that platform. (I've got two licenses for BB4W as it is, seeing as I was on a new laptop and had forgot my license so just bought it again.)

BBCSDL is, and will remain, free. Although it's still under development and is only at an alpha release stage (and has been for over a year now) I do not expect it ever to transition to a 'BB4W style' product. I see it much more as a 'collaborative' project (as evidenced by the availability of two IDEs, both coded in BASIC one not written by me).
It's true that enthusiasm for BBCSDL, and perhaps particularly the Android edition, has been limited (from potential users and from me). But I'm plodding on regardless because when I did threaten abandoning it a short while ago a few people came out of the woodwork to say they were using it.
Anyway it's my current choice of 'brain therapy' to try to stave off the inevitable decline as I age.
Richard.

I've not checked out BBCSDL yet so I'll add that to do 'to-do' list and will look forward to having a play with it.

It would be sensible to wait until the next release, as it's in less than two weeks' time. If nothing else, you'll get a few more example programs. I'll announce it here, of course.

Here is a summary of the poll results, to date, with the numbers from the two forums merged:
Android (ARM): 35 iOS: 12 Android (Intel): 5 The rest: 5 I've combined the 'I don't know the CPU' votes with the 'ARM' votes because it seems to me that if the owner was genuinely unsure whether his device might run 'BBC BASIC for Android' (which it would if it had an Intel CPU) he would have tried it!
In percentage terms Android has 70% and iOS 21%, which somewhat to my surprise is a better result for Apple than the published market share figures for the last year or so. I might have expected BBC BASIC enthusiasts to be rather less inclined to choose Apple than the population as a whole, but the reverse seems to be the case.
By my understanding it's very unlikely that there will ever be an iOS version of BBC BASIC because Apple don't allow apps that can run assembler code or access Operating System APIs.
Richard.

I installed the latest version of SDL BASIC on my el-cheapo "alldaymall" Android tablet and have been playing around with it. I can't get used to the touch keybaord, I'm starting to think I should have brought a plug-in keyboard with me.
But, immediate plus, it allowed me to rename a file in a way the file manager refuses to let me do. *rename yard.php.htm yard.php actually did what I told it to do. The file manager keeps sticking .htm to the end. Now I just need to work out how to chmod it.
